Within- and between-language competition in adult second language learners: implications for language proficiency
نویسندگان
چکیده
Second language (L2) learners must not only acquire L2 knowledge (i.e. vocabulary and grammar), but they also rapidly access this knowledge. In monolinguals, efficient spoken word recognition is accomplished via lexical competition, by which listeners activate a range of candidates that compete for as the signal unfolds. We examined in adult learners, investigating competition both amongst words L2, between native (L1) words. Adult (N = 33) their third semester college Spanish completed cross-linguistic Visual World Paradigm task to assess activation, along with proficiency assessment (LexTALE-Esp). showed typical incremental processing activating within-L2 competitors, similar fluent bilinguals. Proficiency correlated speed target (which prior work links developmental progression L1) degree ultimately resolves (linked robustness lexicon).

The present study was conducted to investigate whether there was a relationship between EFL learners’ use of language learning strategies and their self-perceived language proficiency at the two levels of intermediate and advanced. A total of 67 subjects (39 intermediate-level and 28 advanced) were selected to participate in this study based on their scores on a piloted language proficiency tes...

The number of children growing up in dual language environments is increasing in the United States. Despite the apparent benefits of speaking two languages, children learning English as a second language (ESL) often face struggles, as they may experience poverty and impoverished language input at home. Early exposure to a rich language environment is crucial for ESL children's academic success....
متن کاملBrain Responses before and after Intensive Second Language Learning: Proficiency Based Changes and First Language Background Effects in Adult Learners
This longitudinal study tracked the neuro-cognitive changes associated with second language (L2) grammar learning in adults in order to investigate how L2 processing is shaped by a learner's first language (L1) background and L2 proficiency. Previous studies using event-related potentials (ERPs) have argued that late L2 learners cannot elicit a P600 in response to L2 grammatical structures that...
